In an exclusive Mother’s Day-themed Small Talk, new mom and a buzzy BE-community favorite designer, Lizzie Mandler shares her own lessons learned in this new chapter of designing through motherhood. Read the full heartwarming interview on our blog in the link below.
In the busyness of new motherhood, what are some ways you like to reset your creativity?
I think I'm still figuring that one out... Before Marlo, I would go up to Ojai to do a figure drawing class and spend some time up there to reset. It’s a little harder to do that with a newborn, but thank God for my husband who is on paternity leave so he can spend big chunks of time with her while I go to the office and work on my collection.
If any, what parallels do you find in designing jewelry and being a mother?
Designing is all about creation, creating something that wasn't there before, bringing into reality what was just an idea. In the most rudimentary way the two have that in common - I am pretty in awe that my body created this little being.
How has motherhood shifted your perspective when it comes to heirlooms and finding longevity in jewelry?
My love for fine jewelry was born out of the connection to my own mother, who passed when I was 16. When she passed away, jewelry was the language I learned to express myself when I was unable to put my feelings into words. I found jewelry as my means of communication, and a way to tell her story and my own through objects I could wear close to me. Now more than ever, I want to create pieces that are timeless, that will both tell the story of her mother, and feel relevant to her in the future. I cant wait to teach her the language of jewelry.
What are some of your favorite Mother's Day gift suggestions from your line available at BE?
The Crescent Hoops are one of my favorite pieces in our collection, they are perfect to leave in and never take out (I delivered in mine!). And our classic OG Knife Edge Chain, which can be toggled at any length so you can wear it a variety of ways. It looks good with anything, and really dresses up any outfit, from a dress to sweatpants.
