In Conversation: Styling Spring Jewelry Trends

As the founder of Broken English and longtime jewelry lover both professionally and personally, rings are one of Laura Freedman’s favorite categories to share with her community and one our personal shoppers get so many styling questions about. Stacking rings is a super easy way to maximize wear from your jewelry box and also create a super unique styling statement that you can really call your own. From simple and sleek to colorful and bold, ring stacking is a styling proposition that can constantly evolve with anything you wear. For anyone concerned about following trends, don’t be stressed about committing to a stack for good - it’s easy to switch around and develop with your ever-growing collection of rings. Here are some loose guidelines to help create a framework and in no time, you’ll be stacking like a pro.

Pay Attention to Sizes and Shapes

Begin to build your stack by taking note of proportions and sizes first. By sizes I mean the sizes that fit onto each finger but also the width of the bands. Mix up smaller, slimmer rings with bigger statement pieces always making sure you're creating variety. Usually this happens in odd numbers, such as: two thinner and one wider.

Add a Focal Point

A ring that can stand alone on a hand also can command attention in a stack and have the whole hand styled around it. A single gemstone ring or signet are great accent pieces that work as an anchor around thinner, slimmer rings stacked together.

Create Balance

All hands on deck, literally, when styling your ring stacks. Make sure you evenly distribute your rings across the fingers of both hands so they work as a cohesive group visually. Make sure you’re not over-stacking on any finger or hand more than the other,  rust that you’ll know the balance when you see it.

Number of Rings Per Stack

There is no right or wrong answer here as this depends on your personal style but my general rule of thumb is 2-3 per hand for a more minimalist look and up to 5 for a bolder take. You can certainly go as big as you like but remember balance is key and clutter can come across as distracting rather than eclectic.

Stacks for Everyday

Delicate bands that echo a ceremony ring stack can create an understated but elegant stacked look with simple metals and minimal sparkle. Dainty and slimmer bands in all gold is always a beautiful technique that never goes out of style. If you’re feeling a little more confident in your stacking ability, mixed metals work really well for day to night too. Just pay attention to using one dominant metal and peppering in others to create the “mix” effect carefully.

Stacks for Special Occasions

Break out bolder pieces from their jewelry box and surround them with more simple bands for a harmonious yet still very exciting look. Go for drama here by adding a little color to coordinate with your outfit or some varied texture too like hammered metals or pavé stones but just be sure to keep the balance even or it can turn into chaos.

Try to Avoid Making These Stacking Mistakes

Variety is your friend here! Too many rings in similar widths isn’t very interesting and don’t over-stack to the point where it isn’t comfortable to wear. Being confident and comfortable in your jewelry styling is super key and I urge clients against wearing something that feels like its wearing them instead.

Be Confident and Have Fun in Ring Styling

Ring stacks are a beautiful way to express your individuality and personal style. At Broken English we have countless options of stacking rings that can easily be built upon over time. Keep some of these guidelines in mind but also don’t fret! The more you experiment and enjoy the process, the more natural it will come to you each time you stack up.
