Small Talk: featuring Vise Versa

Who is your ultimate jewelry muse?

H: I love the way Sophie wears her jewelry, it’s always effortlessly cool but intentional. Her style is so uniquely hers but approachable. If she likes it, just put it in my cart because I need it too.

S: Hannah. She’s so creative with her stacking and is the queen of mixing heirlooms with pieces from our line. She isn’t too precious about her jewelry, which I really resonate with. She makes everything feel very lived-in and personal.

Do you have a favorite stone?

S: Diamonds, specifically antique cuts. But ever since we started introducing more color into the line, I’ve fallen in love with garnets. They come in such an incredible range of colors and shades.

What is your favorite piece available at Broken English?

S: The Green Tourmaline Mini Boa Necklace. We’re LOVING seeing some of our most loved diamond silhouettes reimagined with colored gemstones.

Hi! Do you mind introducing yourself?

Sophie: Hi! My name is Sophie, I’m the creative director and designer of Vice Versa.

Hannah: I’m Hannah, I’m the head of production and sourcing and all things business.

Where are you currently?

H: I live in Brooklyn and Sophie lives in Montauk.

How did you arrive at creating your line?

S: We wanted to create jewelry we felt was missing from our own wardrobes. We both come from jewelry backgrounds, and we kept coming back to this idea of fine jewelry that felt precious and beautifully made, but also easy, playful and meant to be worn every day. We were especially interested in pieces that could transform or be worn in more than one way, and that idea of versatility became the foundation of Vice Versa. From there, the line grew pretty organically around rethinking classic jewelry silhouettes and finding ways to make them feel unexpected, modern and a little more fun.

What are three words that best describe the brand?

H: Modular, playful, and unexpected

What does a typical work day look like for you?

S: Since it’s just the two of us, we’re both involved in so many different sides of the business, so no two days really look the same. For me, it can be anything from editing photos and working on the website to designing when inspiration strikes and working on custom pieces.

H: My day-to-day is a mix of working closely with our amazing production team, sourcing stones for clients, overseeing orders, and corresponding with our wholesale partners, with plenty of other things sprinkled in along the way.

What about jewelry is so exciting to work with?

S: It’s commemorative, deeply personal, and tells stories. I love that it’s something you can wear and enjoy every day, but it can also evolve with you. It can be passed down, reworked, melted down, and made into something completely new.
