Small Talk : Khepri

Small Talk : Khepri

Hi! Do you mind introducing yourself?

My name is Reema Chopra, and I’m the founder and designer of Khepri Jewels.

Where are you currently?

I’m based in New York City, where I design and oversee all aspects of the brand.

How did you arrive at creating your line?

My journey wasn’t linear. I started my career in corporate banking, which gave me a strong sense of discipline and structure, but I always had a deep, personal connection to jewelry. I grew up around it, watching my mother collect and create pieces and that stayed with me. I moved to New York after I got married. Over time, I began designing for private clients and later worked sourcing gemstones and manufacturing jewelry for high-end brands and retailers. During this time I also completed GIA (gemology certification), as I felt it was essential to gain more expertise in order to protect myself and my customers when purchasing stones.

A pivotal moment came when a dear friend was going through a divorce and asked me to sell her diamond. Instead, I convinced her to let me redesign it and this became our first signature cartouche necklace and the origin of Khepri, rooted in transformation and rebirth. Around the same time, the rise of lab-grown diamonds was shifting how consumers viewed traditional whites. I saw an opportunity to pivot: focusing on rare, naturally colored diamonds that can’t be replicated. We picked very specific diamonds, that were almost like chameleons, having all different hues and multiple different color tones shaped over millions of years, making them truly one of a kind. That rarity is what brought diamonds back to being aspirational and became so important to the creation of Khepri.

What are three words that best describe the brand?

Authentic. Rare. Transformative.

What does a typical work day look like for you?

I’m usually up before the sun rises. I like to have a quiet moment to reflect before the day starts and everyone else is up. I’ll head to the gym early, it’s my way to reset before the calls begin, which can be a little chaotic balancing time zones and coordinating with gem dealers all over the world! My days are a mix of creative and operational work, reviewing stones, sketching designs, working closely with my team and manufacturers, and speaking with clients. A large part of what I do is very personal, especially when it comes to bespoke or repurposing projects. No two days are ever the same, but everything is very intentional.

What about jewelry is so exciting to work with?

Jewelry is incredibly intimate. It carries memory, energy, and emotion in a way that very few things do. I love that a piece can mark a moment, hold history, or even transform how someone feels when they wear it. You’re not just creating an object, you’re creating something that becomes part of someone’s life.

What makes this moment especially exciting is the shift we’re seeing in the industry. There’s a clear return to rarity, to what is natural and unrepeatable. Natural fancy-color diamonds are emerging as the next true category in fine jewelry which is something we’ve been building and leading from the beginning. To be at the forefront of that shift, shaping how women connect to color, rarity, and meaning, is what makes this work so powerful.

Who is your ultimate jewelry muse?

Women. That’s how the brand started. Women in transition, often later in life, navigating profound change and rediscovery. They’ve spent years giving so much of themselves building families, careers, lives and reach a moment where they’re ready to reclaim their identity, femininity, and step into a new chapter.

These women are my muses. Every Khepri piece is designed with them in mind—often inspired by moments like first dates, new beginnings, and redefining personal style. Ultimately creating pieces for gorgeous, confident women, who are stepping into a new chapter.

Do you have a favorite stone?

Rare natural fancy-color diamonds in the most exquisite unique shapes that show a different tone depending on what lighting you look at them in. There’s something extraordinary about their range of tone and depth, each one existing in its own spectrum of color, entirely unrepeatable. No two are ever alike, and that individuality is what draws me in.

At the same time, I’ve always been deeply connected to emeralds. There’s something incredibly alive about them: their color, their depth, the way they seem to hold light. I’m very particular about the tones I work with, especially those lighter, more translucent greens that feel almost oceanic.

Both of these stones carry their own story. The inclusions, the subtle imperfections, the nuances in color, these are not flaws, but finger prints of the earth. They are what make each stone feel alive and entirely its own.

What is your favorite piece available at Broken English?

It’s hard to choose just one, because each piece speaks to a different side of a woman.

The stacked Vanki ring has always stood out to me. There’s something about that silhouette - it’s undeniably feminine, but it carries strength. It frames the hand in a way that feels intentional, almost architectural, yet still soft. It draws attention without asking for it.

The six-row pinky ring is more personal. It has weight to it, physically and emotionally. It leans slightly more masculine, more grounded, but the placement on the pinky shifts everything. It becomes quieter, more intentional. I always think of it as a kind of quiet power, your inner alpha.

And then the 2-in-1 pear diamond necklace is about movement and transformation. I was constantly being asked for classic tennis pieces, something simple, something essential. But I wanted to rethink that. This piece moves between a necklace and a bracelet, giving you both without feeling overly designed. It’s fluid, feminine, and effortless: an everyday piece that still feels elevated.

Is there anything new and exciting you have coming up?

Yes, the Cartouche Charm Collection is already live, and it’s one of our most successful lines, evolved from our cartouche necklaces. It gives the ability to our clients to customize or just build over time. There are unlimited options to choose from: from diamond shape, colors, setting, bezel, prong or halo. It makes the ability to create with unlimited possibilities to be unique. The finished product looks unbelievable when diamond color, shapes and settings are put together, especially if a little mismatched.

Best place to find inspiration?

Everyday and anywhere! I could be at an event where I see a woman wearing a beautiful dress, and I don’t feel like her jewelry is doing justice to her or what she’s wearing. I could be sitting across from a friend having coffee and I’m watching her hand gestures while she speaks which inspire potential new design. Other times it is as simple as me falling in love with a diamond and designing around it. I find inspiration in everyday life because I view jewelry through the lens of problem-solving: constantly looking for creative ways to help women incorporate it into their daily lives in a functional, effortless way.

Best soundtrack for designing?

For me usually something moody or potentially romantic. I love Kings of Leon, Pyro and Supersoaker which are usually on repeat when I’m doing anything artistic.

Best book you’ve read lately?

I’m almost embarrassed to share! I stay away from serious novels. Most of my reads include historical romance. My husband always jokes with me saying I was born at the wrong time. So most of my reads include books that allow me to escape into that time period in history. Some of my favorites are from Judith McNaught, one I read recently was Whitney, My Love. I think what made it special and nostalgic to me is that these were my mom’s favorite books that were passed down to me. It’s funny when we go away together because we are sitting on the beach reading the same sappy romance from the 19th century.

Best way to wind down after a busy season?

Without question, my family is my happy place. I’m drawn to quiet, remote places. Somewhere removed from the noise, where conversations are few and the pace slows down. My favorite moments are the simplest ones: watching my son on the beach while I sit nearby, reading, or letting my mind wander into new ideas and designs.

Many of my travels are shared with my parents. I was fortunate to grow up surrounded by all four of my grandparents, who played such a meaningful role in shaping me. Now, seeing my parents with my son brings a deep sense of peace. It feels like everything has come full circle in the most beautiful way.
