Marie Claire’s Fashion Director Sara Holzman edits for the multifaceted woman, which also hits very close to home. As a new mom and a jet-setting fashion editor, she cuts out the noise with a laser-focus when it comes to her own wardrobe, honing in on classic pieces with a refreshing, seasonal twist. She takes the same approach with her discerning taste in jewelry and has graciously shared her favorites with our BE community.
What kind of jewelry vibe are you especially loving right now and why?
I’ve always loved jewelry that feels classic but not too perfect, like something your very chic grandmother might have worn, but stripped back and mixed into a modern wardrobe. I’m drawn to pieces with personality that you can still wear every single day: a pinky ring, a great chain, a little gold earring, something beaded or slightly offbeat. The best jewelry feels instinctive, like it has become part of you.
How are you styling some of these jewels personally?
I tend to wear jewelry pretty casually, which is how I think it looks best—like it’s been folded into your everyday life rather than saved for some imagined special occasion. I love a long gold chain with a crisp button-down, a pinky ring with trousers and a T-shirt, or a great gold bracelet with something extremely simple. My wardrobe is fairly classic, so jewelry is usually where I let things get a little more personal. I also have a real pearl problem and own far too many, but I love how they can look ladylike, strange, or a little undone depending on what you wear them with.
Are there some trends you’re really into right now? In jewelry, fashion, music, art, food?
I’m really into the beaded jewelry trend right now. It feels playful and not too serious, but it can also make very classic pieces feel looser and more alive. In fashion, I always like when something is a little bit wrong in the right way—an unexpected shoe, an odd proportion, something that keeps an outfit from feeling too studied.
Music-wise, I’m having a real nostalgia moment. I’m going to see Bright Eyes at Forest Hills this summer, which feels very full-circle because I first saw him in college. For art, I love female artists who do portraiture or work that feels intimate and emotionally specific—Lindsay Adams, Jenna Gribbon, Danielle Mckinney, Somaya Critchlow. And food-wise, I’m fully in my warmer-weather farmers’ market mindset: tomatoes, stone fruit, fresh herbs, lots of olive oil. Also sardines and anchovies always.

What about summer are you most excited about?
I’m excited for everything to feel a little easier. Summer dressing is so good because you need less, but the details matter more—sandals, sunglasses, jewelry, a great shirt. I love long dinners outside, farmers’ markets, and the very specific joy of buying produce with no real plan.
Aside from work trips, do you have any other fun upcoming travels? What are your must-haves when traveling?
I have a few family trips this summer that I’m really looking forward to. We’re visiting a friend’s cottage in Canada, and I’ll fully be channeling the Martin Short Netflix documentary version of cottage life. We also spend a lot of time at Lewes Beach in Delaware, where my husband grew up, which has become a really special family place for us. And later this year, we’re going to Japan, which is a huge bucket-list trip.
My must-haves are pretty consistent: an oversized button-down, a sweater because I’m always cold, flat shoes I can actually walk in, a huge tote, and my jewelry uniform—a mix of vintage and collected pieces that makes even the most basic travel outfit feel like me.
