Designer Moritz Glik answers a quick 15 in our latest installation of Small Talk.
Hi! Do you mind introducing yourself?
My name is Moritz Glik. I am a bench jeweler and the sole designer for my brand Moritz Glik. We specialize in jewelry featuring Kaleidoscope Shakers™ that hold loose stones, seen through sapphire crystal panes.
Where are you currently?
I am based in New York City where I have lived since 1991, after moving from my home country, Brazil.
How did you arrive at designing your line?
While working from home, I was inspired by lucite boxes of loose stones, captured by the way they move back and forth. I set out to translate that into wearable art. I like to call it a happy accident.
What are three words that best describe your designs?
Effortless, whimsical, avant-garde.
What does a typical work day look like for you?
I wake up, have breakfast, then I do one of my favorite things: swim. Then I get ready and ride my bike to the studio, where I typically am the last one to leave. I bike home, cook, and prepare to do it all again!
What about jewelry is so exciting to work with?
I have always loved making things by hand, which is part of what drew me to jewelry design and the ingenuity that comes with it. It has allowed my creativity to shine in ways that resonate with people. People that choose my jewelry assign it personal meaning and purpose, and that meaning is backed with hours of work by me and other gifted artisans.
Who is your ultimate jewelry muse?
My ultimate inspiration for designers is Elsa Peretti, but my dream is to have Charlize Theron wear more of my pieces. She is beautiful, talented, and fights for humanitarian causes that I relate to.
Do you have a favorite stone?
Diamonds and Paraiba tourmalines.
What is your favorite piece available at Broken English?
I love the Cravo Necklace. The combination of the Kaleidoscope Shaker with the bold curb chain is unique in an unexpected way.
Is there anything new and exciting you have coming up?
I am going to embark on a tour of Asia in November. I will be visiting Hong Kong, Japan, and Singapore for trunk shows, personal appearances and, of course, a little bit of leisure!
Best place to find inspiration?
I frequently find inspiration through architecture, nature, and fashion. Traveling is my favorite way to observe those avenues of inspiration all at once.
Best soundtrack for designing?
I am always in the mood to listen to Bebel Gilberto, who is a close friend of mine.
Best book you’ve read lately?
I read this book The Blood Pressure Solution by Dr. Marlene Merritt, and it changed the way I eat to focus on a more holistic approach to my health. It really changed my life.
Best movie or show you’ve watched recently?
This is cheating a little bit, but I went to the Whitney Museum and saw the Amy Sherald: American Sublime exhibition and cannot stop thinking about it.
Best way to wind down after a busy season?
The beach, Sancerre wine, and bubbles (Champagne).
