The Origin of an Icon: The Tennis Bracelet and Necklace

What Is a Tennis Bracelet?

A tennis bracelet (and tennis necklace) traditionally means a continuous chain of diamonds with a nearly invisible closure. It doesn’t get more classic than one of these, which we’ve been carrying in the store since we started. I’ve collected many versions for myself over the years and have tracked down some pretty incredible vintage versions for Broken English. My clients and I are absolutely loving all the hype around this timeless piece and it’s been so much fun to see designers interpret this design with various colored stones and more unique shapes to the settings. It’s a must-have silhouette for anyone who loves jewelry.

The Origins of the Tennis Bracelet Name

Tennis legend Chris Evert’s style, especially her love of jewelry, is nearly as iconic as her sportsmanship. Halting a massively important match to find her far flung diamond bracelet on court was a major moment in jewelry history. Despite the sporty association of this particular style, diamond line bracelet styles were very big in the Art Deco period, proving the staying power of this piece that is having such a comeback right now.

Key Materials and Design Elements

Shay has done this style so beautifully in a very traditional format but we also have this emerald version with various shapes from them that is just super fun and playful. I love Nancy Newberg’s take with using negative space and Lizzie Mandler’s gold-forward version with pavé. There really is no limit to reinventing this style and I’m positive we have an option to suit anyone’s taste.

Why Tennis Bracelets Are Timeless

I think jewelry classics like the tennis bracelet and tennis necklace are so big right now because the fashion cycle pulls from the not so distant past quite often and wardrobe staples are proving to be a great investment. Tennis bracelets and tennis necklaces literally go with everything. Pair them with a really trendy piece like a bubble hem cocktail dress in the same way you’d wear them with a tee and jeans. They are effortlessly cool.

Ready to Choose Your Own Tennis Bracelet?

My customers really respect classic items and the importance of investment pieces. But they also love to have fun and experiment with trends. For someone who may already have this silhouette nailed down in their collection, adding a new version with black diamonds or sapphires is a great way to flex on this trend. Everyone’s style is different and whether you stick to something more traditional or more playful, it’s all about how you wear it too. Mixing them with chains or strands of other stones is a great way to include this piece but make it your own.
