Birthstone Encyclopedia

Harness the power of the stone from your birth month spelled out in our birthstone encyclopedia. Discover yours now. Welcome to May. We’re in prime Taurus season and celebrating mothers as well as summer’s near arrival. Broken English’s resident astrology guide George H. Lewis breaks down what the power of this month’s birthstone, the emerald, is all about: “The precious birthstone for May is the emerald symbolizing the beauty of Venus, the ruler of Taurus. The emerald is one of the rarest gemstones and needs to be nurtured and protected, two great hallmarks of Taurus energy. Beware, however, of the negative side of this archetype: excessive desire, greed, and hoarding.”

January Garnets

The precious birthday stone for January is the Garnet, symbolizing the grounded commitment and stability of Saturn, the ruler of Capricorn, as he forges this subterranean red gemstone through time and space. This stone, created under slow, deliberate pressure over millennia, deep underground, represents stability, commitment, and friendship. Capricorns are known to be loyal, committed people with a good understanding of the material dimension. Remember Saturn is the father of time, so Capricorns can be very patient.

February Amethysts

The word “amethyst” is derived from the Greek word amethystos, meaning “not drunk” or “a remedy for drunkenness.” The ancient lore suggested that a person could drink all night and remain sober if they had an amethyst charged on their person. Amethyst was believed to keep those who wore it clear-headed and quick-witted in all ways. Mercury is exalted in Aquarius, a fixed air sign, which makes much sense as it conveys strength through argument and a quick and malleable wit. Amethyst also brings faithfulness in love and bestows the gift of prescience and collective foresight.

March Aquamarines

Aquamarine. It magnifies intuitive and psychic powers and brings peace into the mind, body, and spirit realm. It is a stone known for its power to instill and magnify loyalty and courage as well as enhancing the ability for awareness, especially in the emotional and spiritual realms. The stone also protects travelers, especially when traveling upon the ocean or high seas. The healing properties of Aquamarine focus specifically on illnesses connected to grief and alleviating feelings of separation and isolation. It can also help clear the throat chakra.

April Diamonds

The precious birthday stone for April is the diamond symbolizing the heat of Mars, the ruler of Aries, as he forges this beautiful and unique stone through intense pressure and heat from within. It is one of nature’s most powerful stones made from a lot of physical and mental exertion; hence Aries is associated with the head and can be prone to headaches. This stone, when used positively, can enhance the ability for Aries to make successful and rewarding relationships. It aids in clarity and gives the individualistic Aries a desire for more balance. The healing properties of Diamonds help with the pituitary glands and can draw out toxins/poisons from the blood.

May Emeralds

The precious birthday stone for May is the emerald symbolizing the beauty of Venus, the ruler of Taurus. The emerald is one of the rarest gemstones and needs to be nurtured and protected, two great hallmarks of Taurus energy. Beware, however, of the negative side of this archetype: excessive desire, greed, and hoarding. With this year’s transit of Uranus firmly in Taurus, this time will be full of changes and unexpected events, in some ways, an uncharacteristically Taurus season. The message here is to ground and connect to nature: This season’s energy asks us to re-connect to our roots, the chthonic earthy part of ourselves, asking us to garden, tend to nature, make music, and make love. Venus whispers to us to utilize all our senses so that we may feel alive and connected.

June Pearls

June Moonstones

Much like Gemini having two personalities, June's birthstone is also dual-focused, both the Pearl and Moonstone. To complicate things further, Alexandrite is also associated with this zodiacal month and with Mercury, its ruler. Here, we are given multiple options in the Gemini season, so the skill is in the selection process and deciding what is prioritized. The Pearl and/or Moonstone carry a Hermetic quality as they speak to the ability to transmute their energy through changing their essence and specifically their color in different lights. This is a hallmark of Gemini, mercurial in its nature and thus able to adapt to multiple situations. It is the archetype of the shapeshifter. This season’s energy asks us to re-connect to our higher self so that we may master our communication skills in order to speak our truth clearly but kindly. Beware of wasting your energy on mindless gossip and lower frequency information sharing; always aiming to communicate knowledge that has utility and serves one’s own spiritual growth as well as the collective at large.

This unique stone helps maintain vitality and strength of character by creating a shield of psychic protection. It also magnifies our intuition skills when we are open to receiving these gifts. Cancer is known as the portal to life itself, where those seeds are birthed within the mystical waters of our sacred planet. This is a month for you to listen to your body and listen well; you will reap the rewards. The Ancient Egyptians saw Cancer as the beginning of the cycle, much like we see Aries as ours. Remember, the Great Nile annually floods in the month of Cancer, starting the cycle once again.

August Peridots

The precious birthday stone for August is the peridot symbolizing the solar light of wisdom, with its soothing golden-green glow, signifying the high point of summer light and vitality. Leos are natural-born leaders; they provide a vital role in shaping society, leading the way with charisma and joy, and bringing about steady change. The Peridot strengthens the individual and protects the person by surrounding them with more protective and nurturing energy in order to manifest at the highest level.

September Sapphires

The precious birthday stone for September is the sapphire symbolizing the bountifulness of what the earth can produce. Virgo is an earth sign, and sapphires are deeply connected to this element. It is why this stone can also be associated with the other earth signs, Capricorn and Taurus. There is a mutability in the caliber of the light of this gemstone, which explains why Mercury, its ruler, is apt to bring about an intelligent and communicative quality to this sign. When this gemstone is used correctly, it allows for a positive flow of energy to occur, encouraging manifestation. This jewel, much like its zodiacal sign Virgo, is really about discernment and being able to judge what is right and wrong for the individual. Above all, this gemstone symbolizes quality over quantity.

October Opals

October Pink Tourmalines

Libra is the Scales and is constantly seeking balance in the world of polarity. For Venus-ruled Libra, it is the beautiful and proportioned Opal stone that resonates most with the Goddess of Love, known for bringing prosperity in relationships and personal power. In this current season, we will need to hang on to the opal stone judiciously and work wisely with its powerful and positive energy. Pink tourmaline, the other stone associated with the month of October, symbolizes friendship, compassion, self-love, and transformation through the most peaceable timeline possible, a truly Libran archetype.

November Yellow Topaz

November Citrines

Scorpio has a few birthstones associated with this zodiac sign. The Topaz and Amethyst are the two that corresponds the most, symbolizing the powerful and psychic side of the sign ruled by Pluto in modern astrology and Mars in the ancient. Topaz is an important stone for the Scorpio as it offers a balancing effect on the sensory system and calms the solar plexus, which fiery Mars rules. This stone helps alleviate tension caused by imbalances in the body, mind, and spirit. The amethyst stone gives Scorpios an extra boost of strength and psychic power, helping cleanse the body and mind of unwanted energy by promoting spiritual connection and releasing fears and anxieties. With this year’s transit of Uranus firmly in Taurus, Scorpios will feel a direct opposition to their Sun, propelling them to experience a time full of changes and unexpected events. This energy asks us to re-connect to our psyche, literally our soul, re-imagining our soul contract to achieve the highest possible outcome for ourselves. The Topaz stone is connected to water and hence empathy and psychic ability, so use this stone to harness these skills within yourself.

December Tanzanites

December Turquoise

The stone helps calm the heat down so that attention to detail can manifest. Sodalite is an opaque blue stone with flecks of white and grey within. This is a powerful manifesting stone and heightens the ability for rational thinking, permitting the soul that is working with this gem to slow down and think more critically, allowing for greater successes.
