For her legions of collectors, Silvia Furmanovich’s signature combinations of precious materials and artisanal crafts, such as marquetry and miniature painting, set her work apart in a crowded field.
But it took time for people to understand the Brazilian designer’s one-of-a-kind aesthetic. She began working with wood marquetry in 2015 after discovering an artisan in an Amazonian village who specialized in the technique, which involves cutting thin shards of wood into intricate patterns. “Now, everybody knows me for marquetry,” she says.
In the years since, she’s added more delicate crafts, from Japanese lacquer to Brazilian leaf embroidery, to her repertoire. At BE, for example, a dramatic 18k gold Egyptian bracelet is studded with colorful porcelain beads centered on a 19.52-carat citrine framed by diamonds. Rife with color and craft, Furmanovich’s work is at the vanguard of contemporary jewelry design. Get it while it’s hot!
