When did Dinh Van start?Β
The brand was founded in 1965 after Jean Dinh Vanβs departure from his decade-long tenure at Cartier. Dinh Van is rooted in the ethos of βless is moreβ and the idea of everyday jewelry is effortless luxury. At a time when Parisian high jewelry was centered around elaborate and feminine design, Dihn Vanβs minimalist and industrial vision was an intriguing alternative. The launch of the house was perfectly timed to womenβs liberation in the late 60s, the simple and utility-driven pieces spoke to a modern way of wearing jewelry that both women and men could enjoy within their own unique style.Β
Who is Jean Dihn Van? Born in 1927, Dinh Van is the son of a French mother and a Vietnamese father. He attended Γcole des Beaux-Arts to study drawing and worked under famed designer Jean Toussaint during this time at Cartier.Β
What are recognizable Dihn Van designs?
The early designs of Dinh Van relied heavily on inspiration from ordinary objects and hardware. Some of the Maisonβs iconic pillars of design include Menottes, or βhandcuffsβ, designed in 1976 with the idea of celebrating a jewelry clasp as a design focal point, and Le Cube Dimont, diamond cubes derived from the square-shaped rings from the brand in the early β70s. These motifs are iconic to Dihn Van and have birthed many iterations of these styles over the brandβs nearly 60-year history.
