Ragdoll's story begins with the idea of a perfect threadbare tee: that slouchy, soft silhouette with a rock ’n’ roll edge that you spent hours scouring for at the flea markets of Los Angeles or Paris. From there, they created a collection of effortless, elevated essentials that blend LA’s laid-back lifestyle with Europe’s casual chic vibes. Previously a globe-trotting fashion buyer, Ragdoll founder and designer Lisa Larson started the brand in 2013 to create pieces for her own vintage-inspired closet. “I like to dress classy with a touch of sexy, vintage, and rock ’n’ roll,” she says. Her designs are inspired by women with effortlessly cool style from around the world — the girl who can pull off a lived-in oversized sweater with distressed denim and boots during the day or with leather leggings and heels at night.
BE - Let's start from the beginning! You're not from around here are you? How does a European chic gal like yourself end up in LA?... Lisa - I am from Sweden. My husband is a film director so we move here when he did his first feature. I took a 3 month leave from my job as a buyer and ended up staying 3 years.
I’m a Ragdoll. I like to dress classy with a touch of sexy, vintage, and rock ’n’ roll.
BE - Walking into Ragdoll you instantly wanna touch everything, so soft and comfy. What was your thought process behind creating such a practical yet sexy collection? Lisa - It usually starts with the fabric. I am very into fabrics and hand-feel. We produce and develop everything form start to finish. I don’t buy ready made fabrics. Also the fit can make the whole tee. We usually test wash samples several times to get the right faded and used vintage look. With distressed looks it can easily get cheap and trashy looking and for me it is important that the collection is still chic. I guess thats the european in me:)
BE - Every t-shirt has the softness of being worn since the 70's but the quality of being created yesterday, where did the inspiration come from to create such a vintage yet new feel? Lisa -It started with my favorite vintage tee that I loved and only had one of. You know the stress when you loose it or it gets ruined. I wanted to create that same tee in all different colors so you can buy multiple.
BE - Being the creative director of your brand, where do you draw inspiration from? Lisa - My friends, magazines, movies, music and art.
BE - Jewelry is a form of expression, how you wear it, what you wear, are their any designers that you would say embody your personality? Lisa -I wear jewelry everyday all the time. The more the better. I sleep with most of my pieces. I love antique jewelry, but also fun kids jewelry. I mix all colors of gold with diamonds and rubies.
