Jennifer Meyer has been designing her eponymous jewelry line for over a decade! Her designs feel incredibly personal and are finely crafted by hand in her hometown of Los Angeles. It’s no surprise that women return to her pieces year after year; her jewels are addicting! With awards like the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund and a spot on the Top 20 Red Carpet Designers, Jennifer is also an industry darling. But it is her optimistic and sunny personality that comes through in everything she designs.
We sat down with Jen to chat: motherhood, personal jewelry faves and, what she does to unwind.
Hometown: Los Angeles, CA
The year you founded the company: 2005
Let’s start at the beginning - what inspired you to start Jennifer Meyer Jewelry? As a child, I used to make enamel art with my grandmother Edith. That process of crafting something beautiful always stuck with me. It became a dream of mine to start my own jewelry line, and I finally decided to take a risk and do it in 2005. Glad I took the risk!
Thinking back to when you first launched your collection, what were the values that were paramount to the business? Do you find an overlap in these values as a business owner and a mother? When I first started my business, my boyfriend turned husband at the time said the famous Star Wars quote to me: “Do. Or do not. There is no try.” This is a mentality that I carry with me every day, and I tell my employees and children regularly. Gotta just do it. And then you’ll see.
How has being a mother of two influenced the way that you manage your team? There are two things I learn from my kids every day: Finding a solution and always being patient.
Do you switch up your jewelry, or do you put-on-and-keep-on?There are some sentimental pieces I never take off, but I usually like to switch up my necklace layers. When a new piece comes in, I love to “test drive” it and wear it for a few days...or months!
What is your favorite piece that you've ever designed? So hard to choose; it is like saying, “pick your favorite child” Ha! I loved designing our classic Good Luck necklace. It’s so timeless and has all the symbols of love and luck in one piece. It’s one of those pieces you never want to take off!
What's your escape when you need a break from being on as a mom and a business owner? How do you recharge?Dinner and a margarita or two with my girls. There is nothing better.
